    Anorthosis Famagusta FC

Hi, since I am very excited about the game tomorrow night I guess its appropriate that we also have a Anorthosis Famagusta FC thread to hopefully make some Cypriot fans feel welcome. Again lets start with some general information from the Famagusta wikipedia article.

    Code:
Anorthosis Famagusta FC (Greek: Ανόρθωση Αμμοχώστου = Anorthosi Ammochostou) is a Cypriot football and volleyball club which was originally based in Famagusta, but is now based temporarily in Larnaca. Anorthosis won 13 championship titles, their last in season 2007-2008. They have won the Cypriot Cup 10 times (1949, 1959, 1962, 1964, 1971, 1975, 1998, 2002, 2003, and 2007). Additionally, they have won the Super Cup trophy 6 times. The current president of the team is Andreas Panteli and the current coach is former Georgian International Timur Ketsbaia, who was also a player in the team. On August 27, 2008, they became the first and only Cypriot football club to reach the group stages of the Champions League, defeating Olympiacos FC of Greece in the third qualifying round.
Lets go on through the current sqad. Even though I donno the players they kicked out Olympiacos so...

Hopefully some Famagusta fans will introduce the team to us.

    Dellas keeps Anorthosis dreaming

northosis Famagusta FC defender Traianos Dellas warns against writing his side off as they prepare to make their UEFA Champions League debut against Werder Bremen in Group B on Tuesday.

    'Anything can happen'
Anorthosis may start as underdogs, but after knocking out group stage perennials Olympiacos CFP in the third qualifying round, the Cypriot champions will believe they can make an impression at the Weserstadion. "Werder are obviously the favourites and they have more experience than us, but as football has shown many times, anything can happen," said Dellas, who is likely to play in front of the defence in Germany.

    'Enjoy the game'
The 32-year-old Greek international centre-back, who joined Anorthosis from AEK Athens FC during the summer, knows what it takes for an underdog to triumph. He played a major part in Greece's UEFA EURO 2004™ success, and is urging his team-mates to grab the chance now presented to them. "We will go there to enjoy the game and if an opportunity arises to take something more from the match, you can be sure we will seize that chance. At this level every mistake is costly and usually it results in a goal. We will need to minimise our mistakes so as not to give that chance to Werder."

Bremen banking on change of fortune

Werder Bremen will be hoping to get off to a winning start at last in their fifth successive UEFA Champions League campaign. After four straight defeats on Matchday 1, the Bundesliga runners-up will be trying to exploit the inexperience of Anorthosis Famagusta FC, the first Cypriot club to reach the group stage.

    • Bremen – who also tasted defeat in their first fixture on their only other group-stage appearance, in 1993/94 – lost their first game last season, 2-1 away to Real Madrid CF. They then followed that with another reverse, at home to Olympiacos CFP. Victory in their other two games at the Weserstadion meant they finished third in the group for the second straight season.

    • The previous year, Bremen started with a 2-0 loss at Chelsea FC, and that was also the scoreline on their two previous opening nights, when they went down to FC Barcelona and FC Internazionale Milano. The best the German club have managed in the competition was successive first knock-out round appearances in the 2004/05 and 2005/06 campaigns.

    Schaaf giving Anorthosis their due

Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf has been keen to point out that his team will be paying UEFA Champions League debutants Anorthosis Famagusta FC all the respect they deserve when the clubs meet in the Weserstadion.

    Schaaf impressed
The Bremen boss was an admiring onlooker as the Cypriot side booked their group stage place in style, seeing off Olympiacos CFP in the third qualifying round after a 3-0 first-leg win. "Olympiacos made life really hard for us last season," said Schaaf, whose team succumbed 3-0 and 3-1 to the Greek titleholders in the group stage. "By beating them 3-0, Anorthosis showed they must be taken seriously – just like any other club that manage to qualify for the Champions League."

    Ketsbaia honoured
Temuri Ketsbaia's side have certainly earned their accession to the heights of European football, overcoming SK Rapid Wien and FC Pyunik as well as Olympiacos in a campaign that began back on 15 July. Now they will write a new page in the club's history. "It is a huge occasion for us," said Ketsbaia. "It is an honour to be part of the UEFA Champions League. It was a historic achievement to qualify for the competition and we are delighted to be part of it."

CL Preview: Werder Bremen – Anorthosis

What: Champions League Group B, Matchday 1
Who: Werder Bremen vs. Anorthosis Famagusta
    When: Tuesday, 16th September 2008, 20:45 (CET)
    Where: Weser Stadion, Bremen

The Champions League is back and Werder Bremen will be hoping that they can emulate fellow Bundesliga side Schalke 04, who made it all the way to the quarter finals last season.

Werder rarely make it out of the group stages, but have every chance this time round from Group B, which also contains Inter Milan, Panathinaikos, and Tuesday’s opponents Anorthosis Famagusta. The Cypriots have already made history by making it to this stage of Europe’s premier club competition, becoming the first side from their country to do so.

    Positive Start Expected

Werder enter their fifth successive Champions League campaign this season with the clear aim of getting off to a winning start and finally breaking their poor run and making it out of the Group stage. The last four seasons have seen Thomas Schaaf’s side lose their opening group fixtures but a game against the Cypriot minnows gives them an excellent chance to rectify that.

Last season they lost their opener to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu before going down to a shock home defeat to Olympiacos. They recovered well against Lazio and even beat Real at home, but it wasn’t enough to see them through and they finished third in their group for the third year in a row.

Werder trainer Thomas Schaaf is however not underestimating the task ahead of his side or presuming that a win is a formality. “All these small teams qualified for this stage by beating higher-profile sides, so they must be strong” he explained.

“They know how exciting the Champions League is and put in an unbelievable effort. These teams concentrated and focused so hard in the qualifiers that they got through.

“A good start is always a positive” Schaaf continued. “If you can dominate and beat your opponents, it's good for the team and for morale. It's good to know you can win games – that's very important.”

Werder however haven’t made the best of starts to their Bundesliga campaign although they did grab their first three points of the season at the weekend against Energie Cottbus.

The Green and Whites drew their opening two games to Bielefeld and Schalke before going down to a 3-2 defeat to last season’s second division champions Borussia Mönchengladbach. Saturday’s 3-0 win over Cottbus will surely have boosted their confidence.

“We just haven't been at the top of our game” Schaaf mused. “We always set high standards. When we reach them we can see what else is possible. If we play well, I believe we can reach the knockout stage and then have the ability to go even further. But first we have to survive the group stage and this will be difficult enough.”

and alot more great infos about the game tonight...

    cheers!

    Player to watch out for:

    Lukasz Sosin

The 31 year old Pole was the joint top scorer in the league last season with 20 goals in 31 appearances and he also won the leading scorer award three times in a row between 2003 and 2006. He has started this season in good scoring form too and will want to continue that against Werder in the Champions League opener. He scored twice against Olympiacos and once against Rapid in the qualifying rounds, and has bagged a goal in each of Anorthosis’ two league games this season.

    Re: Anorthosis Famagusta FC

Determined Anorthosis hold Bremen at bay

Werder Bremen were left to rue a series of missed chances as Anorthosis Famagusta FC made an impressive UEFA Champions League debut by holding their German hosts to a goalless draw in Group B.

    Missed chances
Despite creating a string of opportunities throughout the 90 minutes, Bremen were unable to break down their determined Cypriot visitors with Claudio Pizarro, Mesut Özil and Hugo Almeida all failing to convert when well placed. Anorthosis proved well-organised and hard-working, and rightly celebrated an impressive first appearance in the competition proper when the final whistle confirmed their point.

    Early openings
Perhaps not surprisingly, Bremen were on the attack almost immediately and had to wait only five minutes for the first openings. Markus Rosenberg's header from a Daniel Jensen cross was deflected wide and the resulting corner, taken by Diego, brought another opportunity as Naldo headed past the post. Anorthosis were unmoved, however, and carved out their first chance soon after as Vincent Laban found Paulo Costa in space in the penalty area but the midfielder sent his shot over the bar.

    Bremen on top
That proved to be a rare Anorthosis attack as Bremen continued to dictate the pace in the Weserstadion, Rosenberg, Claudio Pizarro and Mesut Özil – replacing the injured Frank Baumann in midfield – all coming close inside the first 20 minutes. The best chance fell for Pizarro just past the quarter-hour as the Peruvian international escaped his marker to meet Clemens Fritz's penetrating cross, only to steer his effort wide of the near post.

Anorthosis claim Greek double on glory night

Cypriot titleholders Anorthosis Famagusta FC celebrated the nation's independence day in style by beating Group B rivals Panathinaikos FC in Nicosia for their country's first win in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

    Taher clincher
A José Sarriegi own goal and a Siniša Dobrašinović header in the first 15 minutes set Anorthosis on their way, and although Dimitris Salpingidis reduced arrears from the spot, Iraqi substitute Hawar Taher put the result beyond doubt with 12 minutes left. Anorthosis, who defeated Greek champions Olympiacos CFP in the third qualifying round before holding Werder Bremen in Germany on Matchday 1, now have four points and share the group lead with their next opponents, FC Internazionale Milano. Panathinaikos are yet to get off the mark.

    Dream start
The spectators were not to be disappointed by the first-half entertainment and the home fans were already in full voice when an eleventh-minute long throw was headed into his own net by Panathinaikos defender Sarriegi, under pressure from Lukasz Sosin. If that was not enough of a setback for the visitors, four minutes later Sávio delivered a perfect cross from the left into the path of Dobrašinović, who steered a powerful header beyond goalkeeper Mario Galinović.

Dellas: Impossible Dream Now A Reality

Euro 2004 winner and former AEK Athens and Roma stopper Traianos Dellas insists his side Anorthosis Famagusta "achieved the impossible" in beating Panathinaikos 3-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday evening...

The towering defender, sitting with club captain Nikos Nicolaou and club chairman Andreas Panteli, has spoken about his new club's European dream.

He was quoted by Sport 24 as saying, "I am extremely happy, because we have achieved the impossible. There's nothing lucky about it.

"This is a dream for Anorthosis and Cyprus.

"We look to the future with optimism but also with caution, so that we are able to achieve even more important results.

Meanwhile, club president and chairman Panteli spoke about the years of hard work that have lead to a landmark year for Famagusta.

"We were filled with cautious optimism and achieved the result with hard work," Pantelis said. "We are happy with the 3-1 result, because everything on the pitch turned out as we wanted it to.

    Re: Anorthosis Famagusta FC

    Anorthosis aiming for Bremen boost

Anorthosis Famagusta FC came close to a famous victory against two-time European champions FC Internazionale Milano on Matchday 4 and, with five points from four games, they are well placed to claim one of the two qualifying places in Group B. Werder Bremen are at the foot of the section with just three points but a first win could take them up to second place.

    • The Cypriot debutants gave Inter a real fright in the GSP Stadium in their most recent UEFA Champions League outing and Nikolaos Frousos's goal five minutes into the second half pointed them towards victory only for Julio Cruz to equalise with ten minutes remaining. Mario Balotelli had given Inter an early lead before Nicolás Burdisso's slip allowed Cédric Bardon to level. Marco Materazzi put the visitors ahead once more but Georgios Panagi equalised again before half-time. The point maintained Anorthosis' place behind leaders Inter and a Matchday 5 victory would put them through to the first knockout round provided the Serie A champions also win at home to Panathinaikos FC.

    • Also on 4 November Bremen suffered a 3-0 home defeat by Panathinaikos and face a difficult task to continue their fifth campaign in Europe's premier club competition beyond the group stage. Vangelis Mantzios opened the scoring with Giorgos Karagounis making it two. The visitors' emphatic victory was then sealed by Petri Pasanen's own goal.

    • When these sides met on 16 September, Thomas Schaaf's Bremen team missed several chances and were left frustrated. Claudio Pizarro, Mesut Özil and Hugo Almeida all failed to convert when well placed as Anorthosis earned a point on their group stage debut.

    • The Cypriot champions then beat Panathinaikos 3-1 at home after a José Sarriegi own goal and a Siniša Dobrašinović header in the first 15 minutes gave them a marvellous start. Dimitris Salpingidis reduced arrears from the spot before Iraqi substitute Hawar Taher put the result beyond doubt with 12 minutes remaining.

    • Temuri Ketsbaia's men faced a more difficult examination away to Inter three weeks later. They seemed to have weathered the first-half storm at San Siro when Adriano headed in the only goal of the game.

    • In three previous home games with German visitors in UEFA club competition Anorthosis have scored just once. That came in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup first round against Karlsruher SC which ended 1-1. In the 1999/00 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round they drew 0-0 at home against Hertha BSC Berlin and lost 1-0 at home to FC Bayern München in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup first round. In a total of seven meetings with German opponents, home and away, Anorthosis have still to register a victory, although three of their last four meetings have ended all square.

    • Before Matchday 1 Bremen had met sides from Cyprus on three occasions, two of which ended in 5-0 victories. Those came home and away in the European Champion Clubs' Cup preliminary round against APOEL FC in 1966/67. The Bundesliga runners-up also won 2-0 at Apollon Limassol FC in the 1996 UEFA Intertoto Cup.

    • After their 0-0 draw on Matchday 1, Bremen drew confidence from their next two fixtures, coming from behind at San Siro after Inter led through Maicon's 13th-minute goal to earn a 1-1 draw thanks to an equaliser from Pizarro, who Inter coach José Mourinho had signed for Chelsea FC in summer 2007.

    • Their two games with Panathinaikos began at the OACA Spiro Louis Stadium in what turned out to be a tense encounter. Bremen led in the 29th minute when Per Mertesacker lashed in a free-kick only for two superb headers from Mantzios either side of half-time to turn the match around. However, Almeida's late equaliser altered the script once again.

    • Clemens Fritz scored for Germany in their 4-0 UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying victory against Cyprus in Hannover on 17 November 2007. Fellow Bremen defender Per Mertesacker also played in the game while Anorthosis duo Lambros Lambrou and Georgos Theodotou were on the opposite side.

    • Lambrou and Theodotou were also in the Cyprus team that earned a 1-1 draw against Germany in November 2006, with Fritz in the visiting side.
