    Panathinaikos FC

Hi All and special welcome to our guest from Greece!

Hopefully this thread will attract some of the Panathinaikos fans so we can discuss the odds of our favorite teams and who is going through to the next round.

Again some general information on Panathinaikos FC can be found on the wiki. Furthermore Panathinaikos FC have a good official English website.

    Code:
Panathinaikos F.C. (Greek: Π.Α.Ε. Παναθηναϊκός), also known as P.A.O. (Π.Α.Ο.), is a Greek professional football club based in Athens, Greece. Founded in 1908, they play in the Super League Greece and are one of the oldest and most successful clubs in Greek football history. They have won 19 Greek championship titles, 16 Greek Cups and in 1971 they reached the European Champion Clubs' Cup final.

Panathinaikos F.C. was the amateur football department of Panathinaikos Athlitikos Omilos multi-sport club (Παναθηναϊκός Αθλητικός Όμιλος), the Pan-Athenian Athletic Club, from which the club's other name, P.A.O., derives. In 1979 the department became professional and independent. They have played their home games in a number of fields, most significantly in Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium, which is considered as their traditional home stadium, and in Athens Olympic Stadium. In 2008 the club announced the signing of a contract for the construction of its new stadium, Votanikos Arena, the project is due to begin in the summer of 2008 and end until 2010.
I believe not as strong as Inter but still.

    Panathinaikos out to pressure Inter

Panathinaikos FC make their return to the UEFA Champions League after a three-year absence hoping to inflict another losing start on opponents FC Internazionale Milano.

    • Inter have opened their campaign with a defeat in the last two seasons, going down 1-0 away at the start of both the last two tournaments – to Fenerbahçe SK in 2007/08 and Sporting Clube de Portugal the previous season. As a result, the Serie A champions will be on their guard when they visit the OACA Spyro Louis Stadium, where Panathinaikos have lost to Italian visitors only once out of four games in Europe's premier club tournament.

    Gilberto underlines Panathinaikos desire

Having worked for a common cause while on duty with Brazil last week, Gilberto must now look to get one over his international colleagues Júlio César and Maicon when Panathinaikos FC tackle FC Internazionale Milano in Tuesday's opening UEFA Champions League Group B fixture.

    Experienced hand
The 31-year-old played alongside the Internazionale duo as Brazil beat Chile in FIFA World Cup qualifying, but was suspended for the subsequent goalless draw against Bolivia – keeping Gilberto waiting for his 64th cap for the Seleção. It is that type of experience which prompted Panathinaikos to move for the Arsenal FC midfielder in July, ending their search for a wise head to guide a young squad attempting to return to the group stage after an absence of three years.

    Clincher
In fact, it was the outstanding Sávio whose corner helped to settle matters against the run of play with 78 minutes on the clock. Taher, a 64th-minute substitute, met the centre with his head and there was no way back for the Greens – anything they could subsequently throw at the Anorthosis rearguard, they did, but all advances were repelled by Dellas and company to seal a famous victory. Panathinaikos will need to pick up points at home to Bremen on 22 October to stay in realistic contention.

    Spyropoulos: The Best Team Won

Greek international Nikos Spyropoulos echoed manager Henk ten Cate's sentiments following Panathinaikos' 3-1 loss to Anorthosis Famagusta on Wednesday evening, stating that the Cypriots were deserved winners on another stunning European night in Nicosia.

    ...

"Anorthosis were the better team today," he said.

"We thought we were going to come-back at 2-1 but conceding the third goal 'cut our legs off'."

The 24-year-old maintained that his side would now focus on two consecutive matches against Werder Bremen, at home on October 22 and in Germany on November 4.

"We now going to look at the next match against Bremen," Spyropoulos said.

Meanwhile, Cleyton claimed his side were the architects of their own downfall in Cyprus.

    Match preview

Ten Cate calls for Panathinaikos lift-off

Panathinaikos FC's UEFA Champions League campaign starts now according to Henk Ten Cate as the Greek side attempt to get off the mark in Group B, facing Werder Bremen at the OACA Spiro Louis Stadium.

    Pressure
After two defeats the pressure is on Panathinaikos against a Bremen team who are unbeaten after beginning their challenge with back-to-back draws, including a creditable 1-1 scoreline against FC Internazionale Milano at San Siro three weeks ago. By contrast, Ten Cate's men followed up a 2-0 home defeat by Inter with a 3-1 reverse at dark horses Anorthosis Famagusta FC in Cyprus, although the coach remains in confident mood. "It's the perfect opportunity for us to get some points on the board, and it's about time," said the Dutchman. "Analysing past matches too much is a bit like trying to open already opened doors. But overall I believe we deserved something from both games we have played so far. That's football, though. Matches are often decided in a matter of seconds."

    Midfielders back
Ten Cate, who has Gilberto available after international duty and midfield talisman Giorgos Karagounis back to fitness, saw his side fail to break down PAOK FC in a goalless Super League draw on Sunday. Yet the former Chelsea FC assistant coach can take heart from Bremen's tendency to underperform on their travels. "Werder don't have a good record away from home so let's hope we can keep it that way," Ten Cate said, before conceding that the German team's attack pose a real threat. "They have some very dangerous players, not only [Claudio] Pizarro. Diego and [Torsten] Frings are other good players we will have to keep a close eye on. We have Karagounis back, though, and he is very important to us. He's a clever, intelligent player who really helps the inexperienced players in the squad."

    Re: Panathinaikos FC

    History can give Panathinaikos heart

After two defeats, the pressure is on Panathinaikos FC to find their form against Werder Bremen who have drawn both their opening fixtures but travel in good heart after holding FC Internazionale Milano to a 1-1 draw at San Siro three weeks ago.

    • While the Greek team might have predicted that their opening game at home to Inter would present difficulties, they would surely have made the short journey to Cyprus to take on Anorthosis Famagusta FC in a much more positive frame of mind. However, a dreadful start in Nicosia against the Group B underdogs put Henk ten Cate's team on the back foot and they were never to recover. José Sarriegi's own goal and a header from Siniša Dobrašinović in the first 15 minutes set the Cypriot titleholders on their way, and although Dimitris Salpingidis reduced arrears from the penalty spot, Iraqi substitute Hawar Taher put the result beyond doubt with 12 minutes remaining.

    • It was not what Panathinaikos were looking for after their 2-0 home defeat by Inter on Matchday 1. Goals in each half from Mancini and substitute Adriano – both taking advantage of Zlatan Ibrahimović assists – made the difference for the Serie A champions.

    • Perhaps a home game with Bremen will stir the Athens club to produce something extra. In their one and only previous meeting in Greece, a group stage match in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League, Panathinaikos ran out 2-1 winners. Ezequiel González gave the home side the lead with a fifth-minute penalty, and Evagelos Mantzios doubled the advantage three minutes later. Bremen pulled a goal back through Miroslav Klose just before the break but, reduced to ten men when Ivan Klasnić was sent off, the visitors could not save themselves.

    • The teams for that meeting on 27 September 2005 were:
Panathinaikos: Mario Galinović, Nasief Morris, Flavio Conceição, Giannis Goumas (Elias Kotsios), Ezequiel González, Anthony Šerić, Loukas Vintra, Evangelos Mantzios (Fanis Gekas), Mikael Nilsson, Filippos Darlas, Sándor Torghelle (Alexandros Tziolis).
Bremen: Andreas Reinke, Naldo, Frank Baumann (Aaron Hunt), Johan Micoud, Miroslav Klose, Patrick Owomoyela, Leon Andreasen, Ivan Klasnić, Torsten Frings, Tim Borowski, Christian Schulz (Nelson Valdez).

    Re: Panathinaikos FC

CL Preview: Panathinaikos - Werder Bremen

What: UEFA Champions League, Matchday 3, Group B
    Who: Panathinaikos vs Werder Bremen
When: Wednesday, October 22, 20:45 CET
Where: OAKA Spiros Louis Stadium, Athens

Henk Ten Cate’s Panathinaikos prepare to welcome Thomas Schaaf’s Werder Bremen to the OAKA Spiros Louis Stadium on Wednesday, in a match the Greeks simply must win if they are to harbour a realistic goal of progressing past the group stages.

Upon their return to Europe’s premier domestic competition this season, the Trifili are without a point after two disappointing defeats: the first at home to Serie A giants Inter Milan and the second away against Cypriot champions Anorthosis Famagusta.

Bremen are only two points ahead of the Athenians however, only managing an opening-day scoreless draw at home against Temuri Ketsbaia’s side before emerging from the San Siro with a point, after Claudio Pizzaro cancelled out Maicon’s opener.

The last time the two sides met was in the 2005/2006 Champions League, where Panathinaikos managed a 2-1 win at the Olympic Stadium before being crushed 5-1 in their final group match at the Weserstadion.

    Now Or Never

Without a registered point and with trips to Germany and Italy still to come, one cannot escape the feeling that this is a must-win clash for Henk Ten Cate’s side.

Their disastrous loss in Cyprus might even have effectively ended their hopes of progressing from the group stages, with a parachute into the UEFA Cup obviously a more realistic possibility.

However, theirs is a club with a proud European history, which itself arguably demands group stage progression.

Despite the apparent pressure on the Athenians and their poor European form, Trifili fans will be encouraged by a string of impressive domestic displays by their side.

Ten Cate’s men bounced back from an opening-day league loss to AEK Athens to record three straight victories in the Greek Super League, with the likes of Dimitris Salpiggidis and Andreas Ivanschitz playing particularly well – coupled with a solid defensive display within the concrete confines of the perpetually intimidating Toumba Stadium over the weekend.

Playing at the OAKA Spiros Louis Stadium, the Greeks will need to take the initiative in front of what should be an expectant and large crowd, just as they attempted to do sporadically against Inter Milan.

    In Their Hands

As Anorthosis Famagusta travel to the San Siro with their accumulated four points, Werder Bremen are faced with the potentially more manageable task of an Athenian expedition.

Assuming the Cypriots lose in Italy – despite their supreme organization thus far, one wonders whether it will be enough to contain Adriano and Ibrahimovic – a win for the Germans on Wednesday could see them jump into outright second spot, with a two home matches to follow: one against Anorthosis and the other against Inter.

Their erratic domestic form is a stark contrast to that of their opponents, perhaps epitomizing their often khamikaze approach: 22 goals in 8 league matches would suggest as much.

The positive style of Schaaf’s will certainly worry a Panathinaikos outfit whose defensive frailties have been conspicuous this season, particularly in Europe: the likes of Sarriegi and Simao have looked anything but comfortable on the continent, a sharp contrast to the likes of Pizzaro and Diego.

    Team News

    Panathinaikos

The return to fitness of Giorgios Karagounis is a major boost for the Trifili ahead of their crucial European clash, after the Greece international appeared for his country as a substitute against Switzerland last week, before doing the same for his club over the weekend.

Gilberto Silva, Bryce Moon and Rodrigo Souza all missed out on the PAOK match through injury, with the latter now a confirmed absentee from Wednesday's clash.

Vangelis Mantzios played for a full 90 minutes at the Toumba Stadium on Sunday and the return of the formerly out-of-favour striker from injury also gives the Greens more attacking depth.

    Werder Bremen

The Germans head to Greece with a fairly extensive injury list, with first-choice goalkeepr Tim Wiese, striker Aaron Hunt and midfielder Daniel Jensen all officially ruled out of the mid-week clash.

The former will be replaced by Christian Vander in goals, whilst the loss of both Hunt and Jensen has been offset by the return from injury of Croatia international Jurica Vranjes and the availability of Germany center-back Per Merteseacker, despite his domestic suspension.

    Players To Watch

    Panathinaikos

Assuming he is fit to play, captain Giorgos Karagounis will be charged with the responsibility of driving Panathinaikos forward through midfield, whilst taking it upon himself to lead his players with his conspicuous enthusiasm and energy. Quickly becoming a talisman at both international and club level, the 31 year-old’s legs might be ageing and more susceptible to injuries but they have not lost their ability to win possession in midfield and shoot from long range – two characteristics that will be crucial to any potential success of the Trifili against Bremen.

    Werder Bremen

The football played and instigated by Brazilian play-maker Diego is some of the most aesthetically pleasing in European football. The midfield maestro has the ability to dictate the tempo of matches, providing for his team guile and creativity where his counterpart Karagounis offers raw energy. Diego’s set-pieces, dribbling ability and passing range are all qualities that will unsettle a defensively fragile Panathinaikos outfit but it is his apparent willingness to take possession in all areas of the pitch – his mobility – that might just be the crucial determinant in this match.

    Prediction

So long as an injury cloud hovers above the talismanic figure of Giorgos Karagounis, Panathinaikos will be nowhere near their best. The importance of the Greek international to his club side cannot be overstated and their over-reliance on his set-piece abilities and drive out of midfield might just be their undoing against a Bremen outfit who contrastingly attacking in numbers. The likes of Pizzaro and Rosenberg – along with the aforementioned Diego – might again expose the defensive frailties of Ten Cate’s side on the European stage and for those reasons, I’m tipping Bremen to grab a 2-1 victory in Athens and take a huge step towards progression from the group stages.

    Mertesacker backs Bremen stand-in Vander

Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker says he and his colleagues have no qualms about the absence of goalkeeper Tim Wiese for Wednesday's UEFA Champions League Group B match at Panathinaikos FC.

    Faith
Thomas Schaaf's Bundesliga side have travelled to Athens without Wiese after the No1 ruptured a left thigh muscle in training on Monday. That means a start for Christian Vander, who twice deputised for Wiese in home group games last season – a 3-2 victory against Real Madrid CF but also a 3-1 loss to another Greek team, Olympiacos CFP – although this time Vander will have to deal with an expected 55,000 capacity crowd at the OACA Spiros Louis stadium. Nonetheless, Mertesacker said: "We have a strong squad and have never had a problem when Tim has been missing. We have proved we can cope without him. We have another very good goalkeeper in Christian Vander and have absolute confidence in him."

    Re: Panathinaikos FC

Bremen must turn draws into wins

After three draws, Werder Bremen will be looking to accelerate their UEFA Champions League challenge in Group B with victory against a Panathinaikos FC side who have taken only one point from their three fixtures. Last season's Bundesliga runners-up would be happy to repeat the scoreline when the Greek side last visited the Weserstadion, three years ago.

    • In that UEFA Champions League campaign, Bremen won 5-1 in the final group fixture to clinch their place in the knockout stages. An early Johan Micoud penalty and two Nelson Valdez goals gave Bremen an unassailable lead before half-time with further efforts arriving from Miroslav Klose and Torsten Frings after the interval. Panathinaikos' sole reply came from Nasief Morris.

    • The teams for that meeting on 7 December 2005 were:
Bremen: Andreas Reinke, Frank Fahrenhorst, Frank Baumann (Daniel Jensen), Jurica Vranješ, Nelson Valdez (Aaron Hunt), Johan Micoud, Miroslav Klose, Patrick Owomoyela, Leon Andreasen, Torsten Frings, Christian Schulz (Petri Pasanen).
Panathinaikos: Mario Galinović, Nasief Morris, Flavio Conceição, Ezequiel González, Dimitrios Papadopoulos, Alexandros Tziolis, Loukas Vintra, Igor Bišćan, Mikael Nilsson (Elias Kotsios), Filippos Darlas (Nordin Wooter), Sándor Torghelle (Evangelos Mantzios).

    • The game in Athens earlier in the campaign – Bremen's first ever meeting with a Greek club in an official game – had ended 2-1 to Panathinaikos. Ezequiel González gave them the lead with a fifth-minute penalty and Evagelos Mantzios doubled the advantage three minutes later. Bremen pulled a goal back through Klose just before the break but, reduced to ten men when Ivan Klasnić was sent off, the visitors could not find an equaliser.

    Panathinaikos weakened by Ivanschitz injury

Panathinaikos FC midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz will miss Tuesday's UEFA Champions League game at Werder Bremen through injury.

    Tendonitis
The Austrian international has been diagnosed with tendonitis in his left thigh and will not be fit for the game in Germany. The Greek side must win to move off the bottom of Group B.

    sad but true

    Panathinaikos prove Gilberto's point

    Excellent display'
The midfielder was one of the outstanding figures for Panathinaikos on the night. The 32-year-old hardly misplaced a pass and directed play from the centre of the park. Nonetheless, the Brazilian international refused to take any credit for the win. "It was an excellent display from the whole team," he told uefa.com. "Everybody worked really hard to get a result here tonight. I was especially pleased with the way we passed the ball. We showed great quality out there today and that is what we need to take into the upcoming matches."

    Defensive diligence
Gilberto was particularly pleased with the way Panathinaikos played in defence. "I think we defended really well today and we showed real resilience," he said. "We must remember that Bremen have excellent strikers in Markus Rosenberg and Claudio Pizarro and they are really difficult to mark. They also have Diego in midfield. Everybody did really well to stop them from scoring."
