Mourinho: Bremen Important But Not Decisive

Inter boss Jose Mourinho says that tomorrow’s Champions League game against Werder Bremen is important, but not decisive.

The Nerazzurri are coming off the disappointment of their Milan derby loss on Sunday night, but now their attention must shift to Europe.

In matchday one, Inter defeated Panathinaikos 2-0 in Athens, and tomorrow they will be hoping for another three points when they host Werder Bremen at San Siro.

“What we want is to get to the final game of the group already qualified,” said Mourinho in today’s press conference.

“So for us tomorrow will be important, but not decisive. It can give us tranquility, and if we arrive in Bremen already qualified it would be better. The first objective is to qualify, the second to finish first, and the third to qualify before the final game.”

Bremen have scored five times in both of their last two games, but they have also worrying conceded six, including four against newly promoted Hoffenheim at the weekend.

“Do they have problems in defence? Maybe, but I do not remember having a 5-0 in the Champions League,” Mourinho noted.

“In 50-60 Champions League matches the most a team of mine has scored was four against Levski Sofia.

“Werder have a very dangerous attack that can score at San Siro. We must be careful in defence.

“In the derby we played well and therefore our training and preparation won’t change much. Eight or nine players will be the same, and we will start again with the 4-3-3.”

    Re: F.C. Internazionale Milano

Bremen test just the tonic for Mourinho

    Bremen fire power
Bremen certainly did not. While Inter won 2-0 at Panathinaikos FC on Matchday 1 thanks to goals in each half from Mancini and Adriano, the Bundesliga side were drawing 0-0 at home to Anorthosis Famagusta FC. Nonetheless, it is Bremen's domestic form over the last fortnight which has truly caught the eye. Since the Anorthosis stalemate, Bremen have beaten FC Bayern München and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 5-2 and 5-4 respectively – with Diego, Claudio Pizarro, Aaron Hunt and Mesut Özil, who scored twice, all on target against Hoffenheim on Saturday. With Bremen in such rude health, Inter will need to defend well against their German visitors.

    Split personality
"We know Bremen have scored ten goals in two matches but they didn't score any against Anorthosis – so which is the real Bremen?" pondered Mourinho. "I don't think it's the 0-0 version but neither is it the side that scores five. They score a lot because they have good attacking players and also because they play in a league where spectacular football is important and no one is pilloried for conceding. We must be careful, but we know their need to win is greater than ours. Nine points from our first three matches would be great but if we get seven we'll be virtually through."

    'Damage'
Mourinho's natural confidence has been boosted by the recent return from injury of Iván Córdoba, Cristian Chivu and Patrick Vieira. Only Maxwell, Luís Figo and Luis Antonio Jiménez remain sidelined. Save for Daniel Jensen's achilles problem, meanwhile, Bremen are injury-free and their free-scoring showings have given coach Thomas Schaaf plenty of heart. "We must be true to ourselves," he said. "We must exploit our own strengths. Inter's attack is so strong that letting them come at us could be fatal. So maybe the best place to be is in their half where we can do some damage and watch out for the counterattack.

    Ibrahimović threat
"[Zlatan] Ibrahimović represents an obvious threat to us," added Schaaf. "We've known about him for years, when he was at [AFC] Ajax and even before then when he played in Sweden. He is an exceptionally talented player we will have to keep an eye on, but we can't focus on him alone – there are plenty of other good Inter players to worry about."

    TEAM NEWS

    Inter

Luis Figo (foot), Maxwell (thigh), and Luis Jimenez (thigh) are out injured. Nicolas Burdisso will probably start since he is suspended in the league following his sending off during the derby.

Possible formation (4-3-3): Julio Cesar; Maicon, Materazzi, Burdisso, Chivu; J. Zanetti, Cambiasso, Vieira; Mancini, Adriano, Ibrahimovic.

    Werder Bremen

Midfielder Frank Baumann and striker Martin Harnik are out with a cold, midfielder Daniel Jensen has a problem to his achilles heel, and striker Hugo Almeida is out with a back injury.

Possible formation (4-4-2): Wiese; Fritz, Mertesacker, Nado, Boenisch; Frings, Hunt, Ozil, Diego; Rosenberg, Pizarro.

    PLAYERS TO WATCH

    Adriano (Inter)

This fixture will no doubt bring back memories for the Brazilian giant, as Inter also faced Werder in their first Champions League match of the 2004/2005 season, arguably his best ever, and he scored a brace for Roberto Mancini’s side. He went on to score five more goals in the competition, and this season he already opened his account in the first match with a late goal against Panathinaikos.

The big striker has been on a steady decline since that brilliant 2004/2005 campaign, in part due to a deteriorating relationship with former coach Mancini, but this season he aims to finally make his comeback. There’s certainly no lack of faith from Mourinho, who has been him giving plenty of chances recently, and it would be a surprise to see him out of the starting line up for this one.

    Claudio Pizarro (Werder Bremen)

The 29-year-old Peruvian striker made a surprising return to Werder Bremen last summer as he was loaned out by Chelsea, where he wasn’t a success. Pizarro had already played for Werder between 1999 and 2001, scoring 29 goals in all, before joining Bayern Munich, where he stayed for six years and netted 71 goals. This season he has already scored 3 times, which is more than he managed during an entire season at Stamford Bridge (where he scored just twice). The experienced striker also won’t conjure up happy memories for Inter, as he scored the opening goal in their last home game against a German side, two years ago, when they hosted Bayern Munich, and lost 2-0.

    PREDICTION

Inter are capable of slipping up in just about any European game, while Werder Bremen are known as one of those teams who can win or lose against anyone, so it’s a tough one to call. On paper, the Nerazzurri have more quality all across the pitch, but their defence will be severely tested by an attack that’s been firing on all cylinders, scoring 10 goals in their last two league games.

Home advantage could prove decisive, and Inter will be eager to make their fans forget the derby defeat with a good performance on their own turf, though Werder have shown they can be strong away from home as well by beating Bayern 5-2 in Munich recently. Just about anything could happen, but Inter’s wealth of options in attack should allow them to sneak a win, perhaps by the odd goal.

Pizarro pumped up after San Siro strike

aving kept Werder Bremen's UEFA Champions League bid alive with a vital equaliser at FC Internazionale Milano, Claudio Pizarro admitted he "loves playing" at the Italian outfit's iconic San Siro home.

    Bremen lifeline
Pizarro scored against Inter two years ago when FC Bayern München ran out 2-0 winners at exactly the same stage of the competition and the Peruvian marksman again rose to the occasion to give Bremen a point to add to the one they attained against Anorthosis Famagusta FC two weeks ago. The match had looked to be running away from Thomas Schaaf's side in a first half dominated by the Italian champions, but the visitors never gave up and on 62 minutes, the 29-year-old stole into the area to give his side a 1-1 draw and a lifeline.

    'Lucky ground'
"We're very satisfied with getting a point here because it's not an easy place to come," he told uefa.com. "But I love playing here. It seems to be a lucky ground for me. Playing at such a fantastic stadium in front of so many supporters is an incredible experience and now we're back in the running because the 1-1 draw puts us in an excellent position. We play Panathinaikos [FC] in our next match and that represents a great chance to get three points – we expect to win that one."

    Inter frustrated by Pizarro again

FC Internazionale Milano and Werder Bremen shared the spoils in an eventful Group B draw as Claudio Pizarro returned to haunt the Nerazzurri with another goal.

    Nemesis
Pizarro had scored against Internazionale for FC Bayern München at the same stage of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League and, after a glaring first-half miss, made amends two minutes past the hour with another crucial strike. That cancelled out Maicon's opening goal, negated Inter's dominance and kept alive the European hopes of Thomas Schaaf's men, who have two points from as many games ahead of back-to-back matches against Panathinaikos FC. Inter, on four points, are dead level at the top with their next opponents, Anorthosis Famagusta FC.

    Strong start
If Inter were on the back foot for long spells of their defeat in Sunday’s Milan derby, the opposite was true tonight. José Mourinho made five changes and his charges took to their task with relish, attacking from the outset and threatening to take the lead inside a minute as Zlatan Ibrahimović picked out Adriano's run into the penalty area for a spectacular bicycle kick that flew narrowly over. Adriano and Ibrahimović were at the centre of much of Inter's excellent play, the former delivering a crossfield pass which his strike partner fired wide via Naldo's deflection. Ibrahimović soon returned the favour, dispossessing Petri Pasanen before teeing up a run and shot from the effervescent Adriano.

Pizarro Strikes Back To Deny Inter

Inter were frustrated at the San Siro as despite taking an early lead through Maicon, they had to settle for a point as Claudio Pizarro struck back to earn Werder Bremen a share of the spoils.

    Team News

Inter were hoping to make it two wins out of two in Group B, while at the same time bouncing back from the derby defeat to Milan at the weekend. Luis Figo, Maxwell, and Luis Jimenez were all out injured, but Sulley Muntari was available having been suspended in Serie A. Jose Mourinho once again fielded a forward trident, this time consisting of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Adriano and teenage wonderkid Mario Balotelli.

Werder Bremen drew their Champions League opener at home against Anorthosis Famagusta, but they had rattled in 10 goals in their last two Bundesliga wins over Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim. Striker Martin Harnik missed out with a cold, while Hugo Almeida was injured. Brazilian star Diego started and was expected to be the German side's main threat.
