There are about 15 scouts in Bremen. When I was a coach, I said, for example, that I needed a left back. I was not offered 100 people to choose. The football director and sports director worked to find three people on the left flank. They look from 40 or 100 profiles and choose three. When the three are selected, they invite the head coach.
I was invited three times. Two of the players that we acquired are Yannick Westergard, whom we bought for 2.5 million euros from Hoffenheim and a year and a half later sold for 15 million to Borussia Mönchengladbach (the Danish central defender now defends the colors of Southampton - approx. Auth.), and Anthony Uja - they bought in Cologne for 4.5 million euros and literally a year later sold for 11 million to China (Nigerian striker, now playing in Union - approx. Auth.).
I came to the office, they include a video prepared by the scouting department. Here is a player, here is his ins and outs: he played there for so many years, such a working leg, a selection of 15-20 minutes, strengths, weaknesses.
Then it comes to the moment when they leave me alone, and I can calmly watch. I am alone, no one can influence me. Of the three, I could see one, go have a drink of coffee. I can come to the second tomorrow to see, think, live the night and not be mistaken.
And then I make a decision. When the head coach decided, their task is to organize everything. Not just to please, but the head coach is the captain of a ship called Werder Bremen. I select a player for the vision of football that I want to have.
